Synopsis

Medecin Sans Frontier Australia is a partner of the section of the Medecins Sans Fontieres International movement, which aids global effort through recruitment of international field staff, medical assistance, raising funds, and raising awareness of issues in the field.

Risk Away (RA), as a chartered accountant firm has been asked to provide seven key performance indicators which is representative to Medecin Sans Frontier Australia and ways to measure them. The seven key performance indicators which we propose to the organisation are:
1. Retained Earnings
2. Expenditure
3. Retention of volunteers
4. Website
5. Subscription of newsletter
6. Recruitment sessions
7. Donors

For cost effectiveness, a performance indicator would be the retained earnings. This would indicate that there is growth and an increase in donations. Another performance indicator for cost effectiveness is the organisation’s expenditure. Monitoring of the surplus ensures that the donations are sufficient to cover the expenses.

For human resources, a performance indicator is the retention of volunteers. Retention of volunteers can be measured through volunteer turnover. For the turnover, there should be two divisions, one for the international staff, and another for medical assistance. Analysing the two separately will give a better idea of which division requires more attention.

On the issue of awareness, a good indicator of performance would be the organisation’s website activity. Specifically, displaying the number of visits to the website could both raise awareness as well as serve as an indication of the general public’s interest in the organisation’s activities. Another indication of awareness can be gauged through the organisation’s newsletter subscription. Newsletter subscriptions not only show good awareness in the community but are also vital to the organisations fund raising abilities. In addition, the website advertises recruitment sessions and attendance to these sessions show awareness as well as commitment to the organisation’s cause.

For independence and ethics, a performance indicator is the donors. Donors are analysed by having three divisions. The three divisions are political, economic, and religious influence. The organisation can set the acceptable rate, and should the rate be higher than the acceptable rate the organisation can reconsider the donations received.

Hi Diane,

Great structure and easy to read layout.

I just have a comment regarding the awareness KPIs. I think you suggested just measuring the number of people visiting the website, subscribing to the newsletter and the headcount at recruitment sessions.

I believe that they are great indicators, but would probably be more useful if it was compared against an industry average or against a pre-determined benchmark so as to determine whether or not MSFA was achieving their targets.

Well done on a concise and succint report.

Regards
Joel

Hi Diane

Well done...The report is really good.

The report will be better if you put more information under each KPI (such as how it works or where to collect the data), but overall it is great.

We really enjoy to read your report.

Hi Diane,
great work, really liked how you gave specific calculations for some of your KPIs!
Good Luck!

Thank you for your submission.
We noted in your submission under Independence and Ethics that you considered donations from political sources as a significant risk which should be monitored. Do you think that funding from other sources should be monitored as well? If so, which sources?

Hi Diane,

I liked the clear and simple structure used for your report. The explanations for each KPI were succinct albeit a little brief? Although, it was clear you had addressed each factor as outlined by MSF.

Now perhaps the inclusion of more specific calculations and quantitative measures under some/more of the KPIs may increase the ability to compare with similar organisations or internally from year to year.

Your executive summary gives a good indication about the content of your report.

Good job and good luck.

I liked the report for its brevity and clarity. Although it would have been good to see a bit more flesh on the bone. Good job.

Yes, donations from political sources should be monitored, as according to MSF Australia they ensure that there is not more then 20% of donations from political, economic and religious influence.

Economic and religious sources should also be monitored to ensure that donations are given for the right purposes.
