Synopsis

Médecins Sans Frontières Australia (MSFA) is helping to provide a much needed service to the global community.

To allow management to make more informed decisions, that will lead to a better quality of service being provided, there are a number of activities that can be performed more efficiently.

Certain key performance indicators (KPI) should be considered by management when making decisions, pertaining to issues such as:
-logistics
-quality of human resources
-marketing
-budgeting
-project evaluation

By highlighting these KPI and explaining how they should be measured, we believe that management will be better equiped to decisions that will not only be in the best interest of MSFA and its stakeholders, but more importantly, in the best interests of those people that most need the invaluable services provided by MSFA.

Well done. I thought your KPIs were clear and concise. Logistics was a good area to consider in terms of cost effectiveness.

KPIs that you brought up were highly relevant.

I was wondering if any of your KPIs took into account the issue of independence and ethics of MSFA?

Well done again for a succinct report.

Hi Joel,
Thanks for your feedback.
You pose a very good question.
As i am sure you would agree, both independence and ethics are crucial to running a business, particularly in those organizations that provide services such as those offered by MSFA.

Personally, i would like to think that independence and ethics would be enshrined as part of the vision and mission of MSFA. Independence and ethics in that they help all peoples, nations and tongues, and hold no racial prejudices.

To be an employee of MSFA, i would also think that one would have to demonstrate the right qualities and attitudes during the interview process, in order to gain employment.

Personally, i can think of few other organisations that provide such valuable services. By providing these services to all those in need, they are demonstrating a high degree of independence, and strong ethical standards.

These points were alluded to when discussing the quality of labour that could be sourced, and the goals of the company servicing as much need as possible.

i trust that this is helpful.

thank you once again,

Andrew

Hey guys,
great work with the report, really liked the KPI on logistics.
I thought the way in which you tackled the measurement for the quality of HR was interesting. Although don't you think it might be hard to calculate the percentage of incorrect administrations, as there patients in these poorer nations may be susceptible to other diseases during treatment? Having said that I don't know if that is actually true in the world of medicine, as I can't say it's my forte! :)
Great work otherwise!

Thank you for your submission.
We were interested in your ideas around Marketing and Advertising, specifically your KPI to monitor the response rate received from each form of advertising. How would you capture information to measure against this KPI?

Hi Alicia,

thank you for your comment.

we believe that it is very important to calculate and monitor the number of incorrect administrations of vaccines or other medicines to help establish performance targets and monitor resource usage.

the most efficient way of doing this is by keeping a log of all vaccines administered.

for instance a nurse can administer a shot, and his/her assitant can be preparing the next shot, at the same time recording the batch and serial number, date and time of administration and comment (eg correct or broken).

If a computer is available, an excel spreadsheet with one column for each of the above listed categories would be an excellent tool to use.

any ampules that are wasted due to breakage or broken sealage should also be recorded by including details in the Comments column of the spreadsheet.

thus quatitative analysis could be conducted providing useful performance related data for management to used.

since logs are already kept for medicine administration, we can use technology to our advantage and make minor changes to the process, allowing for continuous improvement to occur.

i hope that this helps answer your question!

thanks for the comment!

To the Judge,

Thank you for the comment.

Like any business, MSFA is required to make strategic and tactical decisions with the goals of expanding its profile, funding and support base and public awareness.

The media is the most effective means by which these goals can be achieved.

The most simple way of collecting data to compute response rates is to issue a contributor/sponsor survey.

The survey could be posted up on the website, allowing people to post their answers easily and efficiently online, mailed out to those people that express and interest in making a contribution to MSFA as part of an information pack, or conducted over the phone as people call in to the hotline. Mailouts and flyers can also be posted out to key strategic target areas to get a cross section of community opinions.

The key questions in the survey should be the following:
- where did you hear about MSFA? (provide a list of choices. eg friend, magazine, tv, radio, billboard, internet, other)
- which form of advertising used by MSFA impacted upon you the most? (provide list as above)
- what improvements can be made to make the public more aware of MSFA's purpose and goals?

All the feedback data should be put into a computer database, allowing for easy access and analysis.

Quantitative statistical analysis can then be conducted. For example, by using regression analysis and making inferences about the population based on sample statistical analysis, the most effective marketing and advertising methods can be discovered, and subsequesntly improved upon.

Obviously there will be a substantial cost involved with this information gathering process (which should be tightly controlled), however such endevors will allow for management to plan and budget for the future, using the most effective and cost effective forms of marketing and advertising to reach a wider target audience.

Market research is fundamental to the success of all businesses that have to pitch to the customer, and in the case of MSFA, to the contributors.

By gaining a greater understanding of how to reach their audience more effectivley, MSFA will be able to target a larger audience that will be responsive to their message, and hopefully develop a larger resource base.

I trust that this answers your question.

Thank you for your interest,

Andrew
