The challenge
Médecins Sans Frontières is the world's leading independent medical-humanitarian aid organisation committed to two objectives: providing medical-humanitarian aid to those who need it most, regardless of race, religion, gender or political affiliation; and raising awareness of the plight of the people they help by speaking out about the causes of suffering.
Médecins Sans Frontières Australia, as a partner section of the Médecins Sans Frontières International movement, aids this global effort in the following areas:
- Recruitment of International Field Staff, both medical and non medical (including a variety of professions such as accountants, human resource managers, logisticians, marketers), to undertake missions;
- Specialist paediatric and women's health medical assistance to operations through the Project Unit in Sydney;
- Raising funds to support this work and informing donors of the work undertaken on their behalf; and
- Raising awareness of issues in the field, and Médecins Sans Frontières' work and experiences.
Whilst Médecins Sans Frontières Australia adopt best practise when it comes to reporting results to management and Médecins Sans Frontières' stakeholders, they are also open to new perspectives and ideas on measuring and reporting their performance.
To achieve this aim, Médecins Sans Frontières Australia has engaged you, as a prospective Chartered Accountant, to formulate 7 key performance indicators which are representative of Médecins Sans Frontières Australia's performance in the areas of:
- Cost effectiveness – that maximises the amount of support provided to the projects;
- Human resources – the quality of staff recruited and their experience with Médecins Sans Frontières;
- Awareness – of the issues of humanitarian crises around the world, the role of Médecins Sans Frontières, and of the impact of the donations received; and
- Independence and Ethics – to maintain Médecins Sans Frontières reputation as an organisation that is independent from all political, economic and religious powers.
In your submission you should provide justification to the management committee as to why the indicators selected are the most appropriate for the purposes of Médecins Sans Frontières and their stakeholders. You should also suggest ways that performance against these indicators might be measured.
To get a better understanding of the role of Médecins Sans Frontières Australia, details of activities and performance are available on their website (www.msf.org.au).
Médecins Sans Frontières Australia are looking for submissions which:
- take into account the specifics of their Australian operations;
- promote transparency and accountability; and
- are cost effective in terms of measurement.
Your submission to the Management Committee may be presented in any format (a document, PowerPoint presentation, video etc). Documents should be no longer than 5 pages, video no more than 5 minutes and PowerPoint no more than 10 slides.
You must enter a "synopsis" via this website with your final response in order for your answer to be considered.
